| Dominion Storm Indoor Drumline was founded in December, 2007. It was formed by the request of Corey Langston, a student at the time at First Colonial High School, to play in the Princess Anne High School Indoor Drumline, which did not exist. Director John Boyd found the idea intriguing – bringing together the best percussionists from across South Hampton Roads into one family – and called instructors around the city to form the first staff for the Dominion Storm (the name was formed by the Symphonic Band class at Princess Anne High School). After securing the services of Derek Sanson (percussion instructor with the Fabulous Marching Cavaliers of Princess Anne), Mike Lane (Director of Bands at Frank W. Cox High School), and Andrew Hummer (who at the time was Director of Bands at First Colonial High School), auditions were held two weeks later after notifying all the band directors in South Hampton Roads of the formation of the group. At the conclusion of those auditions, a group was arrived upon consisting of a battery of 3 snares, 3 tenors, and 5 basses and a front ensemble of 10 students. The students that formed this group came from Frank W. Cox High School (6 students), First Colonial High School (4 students), Princess Anne High School (4 students), Kellam High School (3 students), Granby High School (3 students) and Norfolk State University (1 student). Later in the month, Steve Roberts (Percussion Coordinator with the Fabulous Marching Cavaliers) and Bobby Jones (Visual Designer with the Fabulous Marching Cavaliers) were brought on board as well. Staff changes followed in January with Mr. Lane departing and Marshall Reynolds (Former Director of Bands at Indian River High School) coming on board. After extensive staff meetings, the group agreed on the show “The Board” (or “The Grid”) in order to easily teach the drill to the students since the group was so far behind in rehearsal and preparation. However, after a tremendous amount of work on the part of the students and instructors – especially Derek Sanson, Marshall Reynolds, and Andrew Hummer – the group was able to participate fully in the Atlantic Indoor Association Independent “A” division with groups from Christopher Newport University and James Madison University. At the conclusion of the season, Dominion Storm was crowned the Atlantic Indoor Association Independent “A” Champions. |
